Keeping Integrity and Vision in the Ever-Changing Publishing Industry: The Steve Casimiro Interview
Adventure Journal (AJ), founded in 2008, is an online magazine devoted to outdoor adventure in all its forms. Steve Casimiro, former editor of Powder magazine, founding editor of Bike magazine, and West Coast editor of National Geographic Adventure, is the man behind AJ. Seems pretty straightforward, doesn’t it? Man has iconic publishing career. Man founds dream online publication in 2008, during one of the worst economies on record. But he kept the dream alive and made it work, despite the tumultuous changes in the publishing industry. I liken him to a big wall climber looking at a section of completely blank wall void of holds or protection. He still lead that pitch and continues to be on the sharp end. That’s what it’s like to be a publisher today. There’s no guidebook, no beta and just like in climbing, focus is what will get you out alive and in Steve’s case, in grand style. AJ continues to offer up amazing editorial-driven content that’s soulful and, well, not for sale. Sure the magazine sells ads, but it doesn’t do branded journalism, paid placements or sponsored content. His readers love that about AJ and so do Steve’s contributing writers and photographers. It’s exactly the right path for AJ, even though Steve surmises that he leaves heaps of dollars on the negotiation table staying true to the editorial vision of AJ. Habit for Success?
Staying true to a vision despite what competitors are doing. Casimiro has worked hard to keep Adventure-Journal editorial-driven during a burgeoning era of paid placement editorial.
When Steve was faced with the decision all entrepreneurs have to deal on. When his position changed as National Geographic Adventure’s West Coast editor, he chose to launch his own editorial outlet in Adventure-journal.com instead of looking for another contributing editor gig. Most of us know what that feels like – easy road (what we know, the editorial post) or hard road (pioneering a new way forward; one that mirrors your vision and one you know will make a huge impact). We’re stoked he chose to put everything into Adventure-Journal.com!
