Marc Nager

A Micro Accelerator / Incubator Drops the Clutch with Big News!

Six years ago, Marc Nager was sitting on his couch after losing his job, wondering what his next move should be. Was he feeling that all-too-familiar grip known as the fear of the unknown? Heck yes! It’s a moment so many of us as entrepreneurs have experienced. Instead of going after a safe corporate gig, he did what any member of the LivingUber community would do – he chose a next step fueled by passion, not by safety. Marc joined the 54-hour mini-incubator Startup Weekend, part of non-profit UP-Global. He joined a team that built a global community and resource center for entrepreneurs and developed a commitment to furthering the power of entrepreneurs in powering today’s (and tomorrow’s) global economy. On June 18, when I interviewed Marc for The Intrepid Entrepreneur, the news broke that UP Global/Startup Weekend was purchased by Techstars, a Colorado-based accelerator program for entrepreneurs. Listen in as Marc talks about this amazing journey and the future of UP Global, Startup Weekend and Techstars! Marc Nager has been there… Six years ago, he found himself sitting on his couch after losing his job, wondering what his next move should be, and yes, feeling the grip of fear of the unknown. “It’s very, very scary to be in that position,” he said. “And looking back, if I had a community dedicated to supporting my next move as an entrepreneur, it would have made the process so much easier.” Despite the allure of the ‘safety’ of a corporate position, Marc couldn’t say no when an opportunity at Startup Weekend entered the picture. He went for it and basically never stopped going for it, as the non-profit expanded exponentially. Startup Weekend (UP Global is the parent company) is a micro-incubator for entrepreneurs. Basically you show up Friday with a concept, and work 54-hours with motivated, supportive peers (read: your new community) and emerge Sunday with a plan to pitch with five to eight of your new best friends (aka peers). It’s been wildly successful and the demand for both the events and the post event networking community is off the charts. Marc has played a pivotal role in the entity’s growth as Community Manager. But you guessed it, in this organization, he’s worn many hats (like any good entrepreneur). Community is so important to Startup Weekend because entrepreneurs NEED it to continue to innovate, offer solutions and grow in numbers. The concept is working… Mid-year, 2015, Startup Weekend counts 120 countries, 600 cities and 1400 events as points of entry.

On June 18, when I interviewed Marc for The Intrepid Entrepreneur Podcast, the news broke that UP Global/Startup Weekend was purchased by Techstars, a Colorado-based accelerator program for entrepreneurs. Listen in as Marc talks about this fast-paced journey from rapid growth at UP Global/Startup Weekend straight into being acquired by Techstars. Learn how the change of ownership will amplify the mission and impact of Startup Weekend and hear Marc’s inspiring vision for entrepreneurs powering the future of business and innovation. The future is SO bright for this new super community/resource for entrepreneurs, it literally feels limitless!

Bravery in Business Quote:

“I want entrepreneurs to know that we all have felt the way you do… That feeling of failure? That’s completely normal and natural for an entrepreneur to experience. You’ll meet people who are going through exactly what you’re going through in our community, no matter where you are in the world, or on your entrepreneurial journey.”

Habit for Success?

“Prioritizing building and furthering community – it’s amazing what people can accomplish when they have a network of like-minded peers.”

Pivot Moment?

The mid-June 2015 acquisition of UP Global/Startup Weekend by Techstars, of course!
